
Why we put our bathroom lamps through “the torture chamber”
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, random water splashes, and the temperature jumping from freezing to sweltering in seconds. If a lamp isn’t built for that, the seals give out, moisture sneaks in, and the whole thing fries. Usually in a matter of weeks. We aren’t interested in guessing if a lamp will last. That’s why we use damp heat aging tests. We basically try to break the lamps so you don’t have to. The sneakiness of moisture Here is the thing about water: it finds a way. Most infrared lamps fail because of something called capillary action. It sounds fancy, but it basically means moisture “creeps” into the seal where the quartz tube meets the electrical connector. Once that water hits the wiring, it’s game over. You get oxidation or a dead short. To stop this, we lock our lamps in climate chambers. We blast them with saturated humidity and high heat for hundreds of hours. If a seal leaks even a tiny bit, that lamp is scrap. Simple as that. The balancing act Now, you might think, “Just wrap the whole thing in rubber!” But there’s a catch. Adding too many gaskets or potting compounds makes the lamp bulky. Even worse, it can trap heat around the base. If the air can’t move, the connector might actually burn out faster because it’s overheating. It’s a bit of a trade-off. We work to find that sweet spot where the lamp is sealed tight enough to survive a steam room, but still breathes enough to stay cool. Just make sure your actual fixture has the venting we recommend, or you’re fighting a losing battle. Real-world reliability A 20-minute spray test doesn’t mean much. Any cheap lamp can survive a quick shower. We care about the long haul. We want to know how these materials hold up after they’ve been heated and cooled a thousand times in a wet environment. Because if you’re installing these in a busy hotel or a commercial club, the last thing you want is to be sending a technician back every month to swap out burnt-out tubes.
