
Keeping Your Pergola Warm (Without the Headache)
Nobody likes that feeling of wanting to sit outside in the fall, but getting hit by a freezing breeze the second you step off the porch. That’s why we build waterproof infrared heaters. Making it “Smart”
We all want that “one-click” magic where your patio goes from freezing to cozy without you having to hunt for a switch in the dark. To do that, we use smart relays or IoT controllers. Think of these as the middleman. They take the low-voltage signal from your phone or voice assistant and tell the high-voltage heater to kick in. You tap an app, and suddenly, it’s springtime under the pergola. But since this is outdoors, we can’t play fast and loose with the hardware. We use IP-rated housings to keep the rain and dew out. If a seal leaks, your electronics are toast. We make sure the heater fits tight against the mounting bracket so water doesn’t pool up right where the wires go in.
The Power Struggle
Here is the catch: these things pull a lot of power because they’re fighting the elements. If you try to plug four big heaters into one standard household outlet, you’re going to trip your breaker. Fast. To avoid spending your evening in the dark, we always recommend running dedicated power lines for the installation. Placement is everything, too. If you hang them too low, you’ll bake the person sitting underneath. Too high, and the heat vanishes before it ever reaches you. We’ve found the sweet spot is usually between 2.2m and 2.5m.
The Reality of Installation
When you mix smart home tech with heavy-duty heating, you run into a problem called “inrush current.” Basically, when a big array of heaters kicks on, there’s a massive spike of electricity. Most little smart switches just can’t handle that hit and will burn out. To fix this, we use heavy-duty contactors. The smart switch just whispers to the contactor, and the contactor does the heavy lifting of moving the power. It’s a simple tweak, but it’s the difference between a system that lasts for years and one that fries itself in a month.
