
Picking the Right Infrared Heater for Your Bathroom
Here’s the thing about bathroom heaters: you don’t just buy the biggest one on the shelf and call it a day. If you go too small, you’re still shivering in a damp room. Go too big, and you’ll end up with annoying hot spots or, worse, you’ll burn out the heating elements way too soon. It’s all about balance. How much power do you actually need? It mostly comes down to how much space you’re dealing with and what your walls are made of. If you’ve got a tiny powder room (under 4m²), something in the 400W to 600W range usually does the trick. For a standard mid-sized bathroom (5-10m²), you’re looking at 800W to 1200W. Now, if you have a massive master bath with high ceilings and a lot of stone or marble, you’ll probably need 1500W or more to actually feel the difference. Keep in mind that short-wave infrared doesn’t really “heat the air.” It hits you—and your walls—directly. This is where your tiles come into play. Dark, heavy tiles soak up a lot of energy. If your bathroom is decked out in dark stone, you might need a bit more wattage just to get that cozy feeling. The catch with high-wattage units More power sounds great, but there’s a trade-off. When you cram 1500W into one unit, it puts a lot of stress on the quartz glass. If your bathroom doesn’t have great ventilation and the heat just builds up around the heater, those filaments are going to wear out a lot faster. My advice? Split the load. Instead of one giant 2000W monster, try two 1000W units on opposite walls. It spreads the warmth around the room and stops that “sweltering zone” feeling where it’s boiling right under the lamp but chilly everywhere else. A few tips for the install To get the most out of your electricity bill, try mounting the heaters at waist height and angle them slightly upward. This lets the ceiling act like a reflector, bouncing the heat back down on you. And one last thing—just double-check that your circuit can handle the initial power draw. You don’t want to be standing in a towel only to have the breaker trip the second you flip the switch.
